I really don't see a lot of hope for the public education system. There are too many problems from the administration of the school boards (the leadership, or lack thereof), many (not all..) of the teachers (I do know some teacher who really do care, and get frustrated because they feel their efforts are futile... because of the next problem), and I really feel the biggest problem = Parents.

Parents don't "parent" their children (a whole different and filling topic in and of itself).

Bottom line, you're right... paying kids to go to school is ridiculous. Its a responsibility, it's provided to them on the taxpayer's dime, they aren't doing anyone but themselves a favor if they learn anything.

Parents need to act like parents and get engaged in their children's lives.
Teachers need to be allowed to actually fail & holdback the students who fail.
The states and the school boards need to work on "raising the bar", not constantly working to lower it so they can pretend as if they're making progress when the state-wide exam time comes. Just because your score went from a 65% pass rate to a 98% pass rate in one year, doesn't mean you've done a "superb job", you still have the 33% of idiots who don't care... the state just made the test easier so bureaucrats could pat themselves on the back.

Okay... I'm done ranting :)

Why work hard for something you're handed? That's the ideology which has formed here in U.S. It is dangerous and it is taking us down. I see more and more mediocrity in junior colleges. In San Diego, California, you don't need to pay tuition if your GPA is 3.0 or higher. Now I'm not saying its absolutely terrible to have a 3.0.... but how about AT LEAST a 3.6? I mean a low B is a low B, heck we shouldn't be giving our tax money so people can get low scores - or even for their education. And if you don't want the money - well that's just too darn bad. People should work hard for what they want in life. If you want an education but don't have the money - go work for your money and then invest that money into getting an education. There is no profession beneath you - become a gardener, work for McDonalds - just nothing illegal please. You will enjoy your life ten times more if you do.
