Listening to CSPAN on my way into work this morning, I had to push my eyes back into place, because the lack of common sense from Americans who took this poll disturbed me.
The head of the polling institute at Quinnipiac was explaining the results this morning and taking questions at the National Press Club. He discussed that nearly 69% wanted a government health care system competing with private health care. However, 26% opposed a government-run program. Therefore, it seems to me that people don’t understand that the government, when it competes with anything, wins. My jaw dropped in that instant. How can you be skeptical of a government run (universal) program, but want the government to compete with private industry?
On top of the 26% who agreed with a universal program (no private industry) only 53% said they would want to use a government option should one exist. Many want to keep their own private insurance! Yet again, there is no logic in how people are answering this poll. I am utterly dumb-founded! 85% of those who responded and already had private insurance, said they were satisfied with what they already had…
There was also a lot of confusion regarding the responses to pay for health care. Many were willing to have the rich and corporations pay more for their health care and only 49% said they would be willing to pay more for insurance to cover costs for others. 72% of those who said they would pay a little more, would only pay up to $500 more. That’s about the cost of a slice of pizza/week – how will that pay for a program that will cost upwards of over $1 trillion? The answer: It Won’t!
The breakout of demographics who wanted government health care and who would pay more comes as no surprise. Democrats overwhelmingly would pay more, but as discussed above were only willing to pay out of their own pocket; up to $500 extra, but were more than willing to have others cover for them. Over 70% of blacks want a government-run health care program, approx. 53% of Hispanics want one and White voters were against the program. Young individuals, 18-34, were also more willing to pay higher taxes for a govt. run program… I know that most in this age bracket, especially until they begin having families, do not realize the true consequences of high taxes or government control.
This poll also looked at 3 classes of voters; Republicans, Independents, and Democrats. Republicans and Democrats left no surprises. Independents did show that depending on how health care goes, Obama could lose a lot of his independent support, which helped him over that 50% hurdle last election.
63% of Americans disagree with taxing health care benefits, which the White House is considering. Health care benefits do not get taxed currently.
I would have enjoyed seeing a little more information as to the respondents of this poll. I would especially like to see the tax brackets that each respondent falls into and the range of taxes they pay annually, for example. I find that these polls leave out important variables that could really put the entire sentiment of the country into a better perspective.
There is a serious uproar over the firing of Gerald Walpin who was the Inspector General of AmeriCorps, who was seemingly fired for only doing his job.
Senator Grassley, a long time proponent of Inspectors General, is outraged by what appears to be political malfeasance. Claire McCaskill, a Democrat and major backer of Obama, even voiced concerns over the ordeal.
Walpin was fired based solely on an investigation of Pocket Obama, or at least that’s what Kevin Johnson refers to himself as. Kevin Johnson, a major Obama supporter and friend of the family, was misusing AmeriCorps funds/grants. The entire recollection of the events that led up to Walpin’s firing, and since, are very suspicious.
Obama said that Walpin was fired because he was ‘confused,’ however that doesn’t seem like a good enough excuse to fire an Inspector General without giving the proper amount of notice (30 days), a law that Obama helped create.
Further information has started trickling out after Senator Grassley wrote his letter and has begun investigating the Inspector General issue tied to the Obama administration. Since Walpin’s firing, we have learned that 2 other Inspectors General have been let go for unknown reasons. They received letters that stated their contracts would not be renewed.
Separately this week, the International Trade Commission told its acting inspector general, who is not subject to White House authority, that her contract would not be renewed.
Grassley had become concerned about her independence because of a report earlier in the year that an agency employee forcibly took documents from the acting inspector general.
“It is difficult to understand why the ITC would not have taken action to ensure that the ITC inspector general had the information necessary to do the job,” Grassley wrote on Tuesday.
Less than three hours after the letter was e-mailed to the agency, the acting IG, Judith Gwynne, was told that her contract, which expires in early July, would not be renewed.
IG’s do not serve at the pleasure of the president. IG’s are specifically called upon to investigate fraud, waste, corruption, and to audit government agencies. The very actions of this administration paralyze those who just want to do their job and be honest citizens. Obama seemingly appreciates liars and low moral standards more than character and integrity.
Did Obama forget that he must notify Congress of any IG’s termination, removal, or reassignment? Answer: He hasn’t!
What pray-tell is the Commission of White House Fellowships?
Every year, the White House Fellows program offers a small number of America’s most promising young leaders an opportunity to participate in government at the highest levels. The White House Fellows program is one of the most prestigious and selective fellowship programs for leadership development and public service in the country. White House Fellows are selected by the President’s Commission on White House Fellowships, a nonpartisan commission of thirty to forty leading American citizens representing a range of backgrounds and professions. All commission members are appointed by the president; many are former White House Fellows.
Maya Lin, Obama’s half sister, has been selected to be on this commission. Her section in the document was quite beefy, but said absolutely nothing. It listed her achievements, of which are all art, architecture, and design. I think it’s wonderful that she has won awards but, what specific qualification make her right for a position on a White House board? I know the answer to that: Nothing!
It’s not like this hasn’t happened before, even in the private sector. Nepotism runs rampant and people are promoted or receive job offers based solely on their last name. However, if you are to be President of the United States and campaign on “change” and new beginnings – then stop using old, tired, corrupt practices like Nepotism. I’m not surprised since he has already reneged on most of his promises - i.e. appointing lobbyists to his cabinet.
“The men and women of this commission embody what makes the White House Fellows program so special,” said President Obama. “These leaders are diverse, non-partisan, and committed to mentoring our next generation of public servants. I’m confident that they will select a class of White House Fellows that demonstrate extraordinary leadership, strong character, and a deep commitment to serving their country.”
“The White House Fellows program is so important as it allows for a variety of perspectives to come together to offer expertise and experience on important policy issues and then these Fellows carry what they’ve learned back to their own communities to benefit Americans far outside the walls of the White House,” said First Lady Michelle Obama.
Non-partisan and diverse? I’m sure certain people will be selected based on their ideological leanings. Michelle and Barack love civil service (HR 1388 & HR 1444)… When Tom Brokaw, Hockenberry, and Maya Lin are selected as members of the Commission, I find it incredibly difficult to picture non-partisan decisions.
Could you imagine if Bush selected Jeb or one of his brothers to be part of this Commission? LOL!
Barack Obama recently signed into law the HR 1388 GIVE Act that would require youth to sign up for a certain amount of community service. This Act becomes much like the AmeriCorps and if we know anything as of late about that organization, we know that it is rife with corruption and government meddling (i.e. Walpin-Gate). AmeriCorps and government funded “volunteer” organizations have always been vulnerable to becoming ideological arms of the parties which give the most or establish them. This is no different than unions receiving kickbacks from Democrats and in turn voting for them. There is a serious problem in our government regarding pay-to-play politics.
The GIVE Act was scary enough because it was reminiscent of what Obama had said on the campaign trail regarding a National Civilian Security force that would eventually be larger than the US military. Many didn’t take Obama seriously at the time, but with the signing of the GIVE Act and the latest bill in the Senate, HR 1444, it keeps looking more and more like he was in fact telling the truth.
Here’s a reminder of what he said:
Here is what a columnist at the Denver Post has to say about HR 1444:
Little did I know he was serious. The first step was the passage of HR 1388, “The Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act,” originally titled the GIVE (Generations Invigorating Volunteerism and Education) Act before the Senate renamed it as a tribute to the “Lion of Liberalism.” It triples AmeriCorps from 75,000 to 250,000. The second step is HR 1444, not yet passed, which would establish a Congressional Commission on Civic Service. The commission would “address and analyze” the effects on the nation and on those who serve “if all individuals in the United States … were required to perform a certain amount of national service” and “whether a workable, fair, and reasonable mandatory service requirement for all young people could be developed.”
Whoa! It’s one thing, out of clear necessity and for purposes of national survival, to have a military draft when our nation is at war (hot or cold). But mandatory community service of up to two years? This is a preposterously intrusive notion and one that is surely unlawful under our Constitution. The Thirteenth Amendment prohibits “involuntary servitude except as a punishment for crime.” What crime have these young people committed?
The “audacity” — to use President Obama’s favorite expression — of such a sweeping mandate is a direct contradiction of our founding principles as reinforced in the Bill of Rights, which emphatically restricts the powers of government over the lives of individuals. The camel’s nose under the tent that has led some people to regard national mandatory community service as respectable public policy is no doubt the imposition of a similar requirement on students as a condition of graduation in our public schools.
Just what we need, more politicians using the constitution as toilet paper and youth having the government run their lives.
Look at it this way – blue will be the new “brown”
“At what point shall we expect the approach of danger? By what means shall we fortify against it? Shall we expect some transatlantic military giant, to step the Ocean, and crush us at a blow? Never! All the armies of Europe, Asia and Africa combined, with all the treasure of the earth (our own excepted) in their military chest; with a Bonaparte for a commander, could not by force, take a drink from the Ohio, or make a track on the Blue Ridge, in a trial of a thousand years. At what point, then, is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer, if it ever reach us it must spring up amongst us. It cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide.” Abraham Lincoln, Address Before the Young Men’s Lyceum of Springfield, Illinois (January 27, 1838)
