Pay Your Children To Go To School

Today is yet another sad day for our public education program, our entitlement mentality in America, and our media.  Tom Brokaw, a new member of the White House fellows board, is pushing the idea that paying children to attend school is brilliant.

If I were to take some of the statistics used in Glenn Beck’s latest book “Common Sense” I would see a very stark picture of our education system.  Glenn states the following:

    • Only 34.6% of kids in Baltimore city’s public school system received a high school diploma in 2004;
    • The Indianapolis public school system handed out diplomas to just 30.5% of students;
    • Detroit’s public school system struggled to have 25% of its students qualify for a high school diploma;
    • 45.2% of New York City public school kids graduated with a high school diploma.

What about our nation’s capital?

On-time high school graduation rates for the D.C. area are not improving according to an Education Week study released Tuesday.

[In actuality the On-Time High School Graduation Rate is Declining]

Fewer than 50 percent of high school students graduated within four years from D.C.’s public schools in 2006, according to the study. That’s down almost 9 percent from 2005, the Washington Post reported. The figures didn’t include public charter schools.

The true rate wasn’t provided for in the biased NBC article however, it still says a lot if liberal media outlets can’t spin the story to a better statistic of over 50%.

What about our education system as a whole when compared with those of other countries?

In a 2003 study conducted by UNICEF that took the averages from five different international education studies, the researchers ranked the United States No. 18 out of 24 nations in terms of the relative effectiveness of its educational system.

So excuse me if I’m just a tad skeptical about the latest idea coming out of Washington, D.C.; the incentive to pay children to go to school.  A couple months ago we were paying young women to avoid pregnancy and now we are planning on paying children to get an education!

A July 1 “NBC Nightly News” segment detailed a new use of tax payer dollars in one of the worst performing, financially struggling school systems in the country – the Washington, D.C. public school system. They are paying school children with taxpayer funds, part of a social experiment to improve school participation at the middle school level.

“Keeping the exuberant sixth graders of Shaw Middle School at Garnet-Patterson in line on a sunny Friday is a challenge for principal Brian Betts,” former “Nightly News” anchor-turned-correspondent Tom Brokaw explained. “But this is not an assembly, it’s payday. It’s called Capital Gains – paying students for good grades, behavior and attendance, part of the massive restructuring of the D.C. schools by a 38-year-old Korean-American woman, who as chancellor, wants to transform what is by many measures the worst-performing public school system in the U.S.”

Brokaw credited Washington, D.C. Public School Chancellor Michelle Rhee for being instrumental in making this program a reality. He explained the Capital Gains program was the invention of a Harvard think tank that came with a $1.35-million price tag for taxpayers.

I am very disappointed that this idea was hatched by Michelle Rhee who, beforehand was doing an excellent job at changing the DC public school system.  She has taken tenure away from teachers, fired others, and has increased salaries among other measures I personally agree with.  However, this idea that America should pay children for an education is despicable and will only cause worse standards among our graduating youth.

My thought on paying children is very similar to the concept of the children’s book “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie.”  When you give the mouse a cookie, he continues to stick around asking for more and more.  He got away with the cookie, so why not ask for more goodies and entitlements until the people doling out the cookies and additional perks are broke, tired, and annoyed?  This is the enabling concept.  If children do not learn maybe we should be looking at the teachers, the parents, or the curriculum!  Why should we give incentives for children to just sit in a classroom?  What happens when that incentive is gone and a college that admits them does not continue handing out “cookies?”  My guess: they will be left with the mentality of a drug addict.  Students will now be addicted to money and benefits and will become lazy and complacent if they do not receive their immediate gratification or, in this incident, cash.  They will become spoiled and even more uneducated.

What good does paying a child to attend school do, if the curriculum and the teaching is so incredibly horrid?  Teachers are not even giving an accurate representation of American history let alone capable of making children smarter via remuneration.  What happened to the days when it was fun to go to school?  When teachers were interesting and engaging?  Where free thought and opinion was allowed and not dissuaded?  If we cannot teach our youth and encourage their brains, imagination, dreams, and knowledge to grow – then what good will that really do us in the end?

Meanwhile India, China, Russia, and various other countries are way ahead of us on the learning curve.  Their children are engineers, scientists, doctors, and the like.  America worries too much about feelings and emotions, and pushing their political agendas on students rather than caring about truth, facts, logic, and wisdom.

I was fortunate to have teachers who believed in free thought and not indoctrination.  I was lucky enough to look forward to school, taking electives that fired my synapses, like English Sarcasm 101 (no joke); Graphic Arts, Call of the Wild [an English course where you went camping, dissected poetry/short stories, and studied human nature], etc.  I wasn’t stuck in a government mandated curriculum that didn’t engage my brain or hindered my thoughts to the point where I could only think inside a small box.  Unfortunately, that same public school that I attended has changed for the worse (and that was since 1999).

As they say when students receive poor grades as a whole – it’s more a sign of the teacher than those being taught.  I could say the same regarding graduation and attendance rates – it’s more a sign of the government agenda than those being taught.

Helen Thomas Questions Gibbs About Obama’s Controlled Town Hall Meeting

The below photo sums it all up:

CBS’ Chip Reid and Helen Thomas double teamed Robert Gibbs today at the daily press briefing on the “tightly controlled” town hall meeting President Obama will hold on health care. Gibbs kept saying lets have this discussion AFTER the meeting. Helen Thomas accused the White House of “controlling the press.” She said almost all White House/Obama events are “prepackaged.” She accused the White House of not “having any answers.”

The GOP Cap-And-Tr8tors

The country was sold into government slavery and economic chaos by the traitorous GOP 8, who voted for the Cap and Tax bill today.  The House spent over 5 hours debating this piece of legislation and there were high hopes that the Democrats didn’t have enough votes to pass it.  It turns out that the GOP had some Benedict Arnold’s in their midst.

I have two new posters for these RINOs:

If these 8 traitors had voted against the bill the final vote would have been 211 ayes vs. 220 nays, rather than 219 ayes vs. 212 nays.  Jeff Flake was MIA for his daughter’s beauty pageant and Rep. Sullivan was in rehab.

There were also 44 Democrats who voted against this nightmare:

I want to know what each traitor was offered to sell us out and I’m very curious to figure out the money trail in New Jersey, which has a huge clean energy program as well as various renewable energy sources.  Even Rohrabacher R-CA didn’t vote for the bill even though Clean Energy Fuels Corp. (the company that T. Boone Pickens and Pelosi are vested in) is headquartered in his district (46).

It would have been nice if the media actually did its job and discussed real news that has a massive effect on the lives of Americans, rather than Michael Jackson’s obvious drug use and death.  Most Americans are opposed to this legislation, but many were unaware that Congress was voting on it today – Wouldn’t it be nice if we could one day have an objective media that would actually give both sides to every story and read things like the suppressed EPA report on GloBull Warming?  It’s late, so I can dream about it…

Anti-Americanism: UN & Government Control

Does anybody recall when George Bush created the Patriot Act and began wire-tapping practices?  Do you remember Democrats screaming about the right to privacy and how that wasn’t constitutional?  Well, it wasn’t constitutional and it did give the government a lot of control into our lives.  The Liberal rantings of “Big Brother is out to get me,” could be heard far and wide and the media certainly wouldn’t let us forget it.  So where is the media now?  They would be investigating… but they haven’t found time to clean their noses after being so close to Obama’s rear.

I didn’t mind the Patriot Act that much only because I was still in shock and appalled by the actions of radical Islamic terrorists on 9/11.  I knew I had nothing to hide and had no problem if they in fact wanted to tap my phone.  However, I now understand that this is not constitutional, and see why there was such a big deal made about this piece of legislation.  So why aren’t the liberals out in full force now that Obama has expanded upon the Patriot Act and is also considering to let the United Nations become the new global IRS?  We may be paying global taxes this time next year.  Why are the liberals, given that several Democratic Senators were against extending the E-Verify program for illegals, all of the sudden supporting eye scans and biometrics to check for citizenship?

Eye scans and United Nations control seems more Big Brother-like to me than the Patriot Act.  If you are going to be upset about the actions of one then be upset about the actions of another, if they are the same.  Ann Coulter completely nailed her evaluation of liberals when she said: “If liberals didn’t have double standards, they wouldn’t have any standards at all.”  You would think that there would be no surprise to any of this, but I guess I am just hoping that Democrats and Progressives alike, wake up and actually stand on principle for once – and call a spade a spade.

The Conference on the World Financial and Economic Crisis and its Impact on Development that begins on Wednesday will consider adoption of a document calling for “new voluntary and innovative sources of financing initiatives to provide additional stable sources of development finance…” This is U.N.-speak for global taxes. They are anything but “voluntary” for the people forced to pay them.

The most “popular” proposals, which could generate tens of billions of dollars in revenue for global purposes, involve taxes on greenhouse gas emissions and financial transactions such as stock trades.

The document was agreed to at an informal meeting of expert “facilitators” and was made available on Monday afternoon at 3 p.m. It is doubtful that any changes will be made to it.

The conference was postponed from June 1-3 and will now take place June 24-26 at the U.N. in New York. While the “outcome document” has been watered downsomewhat from the previous version, it still reaffirms attainment of the U.N.’s Millennium Development Goals, which would require the payment of $845 billion from U.S. taxpayers. A commitment to the MDGs was a stated objective of the Global Poverty Act, which Barack Obama had introduced as a U.S. senator. It requires the U.S. to devote 0.7 percent of Gross National Income to foreign aid.

And what about those lovely little eye scans proposed by Schumer?

Senate Democrats outlined plans yesterday to overhaul the nation’s immigration laws, including a requirement that all U.S. workers verify their identity through fingerprints or an eye scan.

Speaking on the eve of a White House summit with congressional leaders on immigration,  Sen. Charles E. Schumer (N.Y.) said a national system to verify work documents is necessary because Congress has failed to crack down on unscrupulous employers and illegal immigrants with fake documents.

“I’m sure the civil libertarians will object to some kind of biometric card — although . . . there’ll be all kinds of protections — but we’re going to have to do it. It’s the only way,” Schumer said. “The American people will never accept immigration reform unless they truly believe their government is committed to ending future illegal immigration.”

By announcing his plans, Schumer, who chairs the Senate’s main immigration subcommittee, ushered in what President Obama has signaled will be his next major legislative campaign, after the economic stimulus plan, health care and energy.

I am utterly speechless - Is it just me or are we living in an Orwell novel?

More FOBs (Friends of Barack) Getting Into Trouble These Days

FOB used to stand for Friends of Bill, referring to the relationships Bill Clinton kept.  As time passed during Bill’s terms as president, the fawning media found it harder to continue covering for Bill’s past misdeeds and corrupt cronies.  Eventually all the scandalous individuals who surrounded the Clinton’s became known was Friends of Bill.

I guess we could begin using that acronym again for Barack Obama.  I could also use FOO’ as in “Mamma didn’t raise no FOO’” or Friends of Obama – but the liberals would probably cry RAAAAAAcist.  However, my mother did in fact raise me to be ethical so,  I wouldn’t be a friend of Obama.

One of Obama’s mentors, supporters, and contributors is being investigated for his associations with Rezko and for other corruption charges in the city of Chicago; Allison Davis.

Another “Friend of Barack” is under increased scrutiny these days, but only a mere handful of media reports have linked Obama with Allison Davis. Once upon a time, Davis, Obama and Rezko were as thick as thieves. Davis and Rezko relied upon their friend and politically ally, Barack, to promote their plans to redevelop dilapidated slums into affordable housing for low income residents of the former legislative district represented by State Senator Obama. Tax dollars were misspent and pocketed by the developers, while the minority tenants continued to live in substandard apartments. Obama managed to bob and weave throughout the primaries as he ducked the malfeasance allegations and the issue was ignored in the general election. For his part, Davis dismissed the numerous building code violations by blaming the impoverished  tenants for their own misfortunes.

More recently,  Mayor Richard M. Daley has been place on the defensive by the simmering city pension fund scandal. While the members of the complicit media focus their short attention spans on the mayor’s nephew, Robert Vanecko, less has been said about Vanecko’s wily business partner, Allison Davis. This an angle that needs to be more examined closely.

Davis has developed relationships that have made him wealthy as a consummate political insider without ever having held elected office. He  helped promote Obama long before he became a member of the state legislature. Along with his law partners, Davis gave Obama his first position as an attorney at a politically connected firm. Obama never developed much of a courtroom reputation as a practicing attorney, but like his Columbia and Harvard degrees, the legal position that he briefly occupied was important to him solely as a resume credential. Like the disgraced Rod Blagojevich, Obama seems to have spent much of his career gathering a succession of prominent job titles without producing any significant accomplishments while in office. Blagojevich’s eventual fall coincided with his election to an executive position. It is easier to be a backbencher in the legislature than to be a do nothing executive. Obama still has time left to prove his mettle.

I believe the media, this time around, is willing to cover up more than they did for Bill Clinton – mostly to be on the side of “history.”  But there will come a day when Obama and the media will have to answer for their corruption and the company they keep.
